Mole Trap
For a nearly-blind animal, moles are certainly hard to catch. They can also be a pain in your neck. Moles can build tunnels throughout your yard, ruining your lawn and decreasing your property value. Worse yet, the problem will only get worse over time as moles develop more intricate tunnel networks and begin to colonize. The more time that goes by, the worse the problem becomes and the harder it is to stop. Eliminating food sources is not an option because a mole’s diet consists mainly of earthworms. Chemicals are simply ineffective and often have negative effects on your yard. The only real solution to the problem is a mole trap.
A mole trap usually consists of a few prongs used to hold the trap in place as well as a spring-loaded spear or harpoon that penetrates the ground, and hopefully, the mole. Some models also feature scissor-like devices on the end. The trap works by placing it on top of a tunnel and setting it the spring-loaded tip. When the mole passes through the tunnel, the trap is triggered and the mole is pierced by the tip. The mechanism used is a simple design, but it is quick to set up and provides effective results. However, properly setting the trap can be difficult and is often the determining factor of whether or not moles are eliminated.
The most important thing to remember when using a mole trap is to select the proper location. You should always set the trap on a fresh tunnel or main runway. These are the only tunnels that the mole is likely to travel through on a regular basis. Main runways are usually located on the perimeter of your yard, and they usually follow fence lines or other borders. Fresh tunnels can usually be distinguished by testing them with a shovel or even your hand. If you can penetrate the top of the tunnel without much difficulty, it is likely a fresh tunnel. Keeping your grass trimmed makes the process easier as well because it allows for the tunnel system to be easily spotted. Placing the trap by a mound is NOT an effective method.
When moles are destroying your yard, you should turn to a mole trap for results. Moles colonize quickly, and the longer you ignore the problem, the worse it will get. Proper setup and deployment of the trap are must in order to get effective results.
